PFC Mercer Awarded Purple Heart
This event happened in Afghanistan this spring...
Here is the account from former Cadet Harrison Mercer, now PFC Mercer of the 173rd Airborne:
“We were on patrol and an RPG gunner was sitting behind a rock 75 meters in front of us to our 10 o’clock.
I was in the turret of my armored vehicle when an RPG hit the ammo can on the gun. This disabled the gun
and the concussion almost knocked me out. I was completely out of it for a good 10 minutes. Some shrapnel
from the blast came into the turret and hit my arm. When I was able to get out of the vehicle,
I returned fire with my M14 after SSG Seifert bandaged my arm.”
Harrison was awarded a Purple Heart. He deeply appreciates all of the people who are praying for him and t
he entire 173rd Airborne. A documentary film about Harrison’s unit was recently released. It is titled Restrepo. Look for it.
